Tai Chi for Health
(although the class has already begun, new people can join if they register by the second class, July 20)
This slow-motion form of exercise promotes health, calm, and a sense of well-being in regular practitioners. No
experience is necessary for this six week program, and it is safe for people with a variety of medical
conditions. Join Bob Casey, TCH certified instructor, in Kingwood’s gardens on Tuesdays
for an introduction to this gentler martial art.

Lunch with Charles: Hybridizing Daylilies
Bring your brown bag, and spend your lunch hour with Charles Applegate, Kingwood’s Senior Gardener. An award
winning daylily hybridizer, Charles will introduce you to the basics of hybridizing plants. Whether you’re after
awards, or just some interesting information, it will be a lunch to remember.

Hypertufa Containers
(Class full, call for waiting list)
Originally designed to mimic the stone trough planters popular in English Gardens, these cement-based containers
can be molded into almost any shape imaginable. Come learn the basics from Ben Simpson of
Garden Vessels Inc., and go home with a container of your own construction.

Join Kingwood’s culinary divas, Carolyn Carto and Ruth Cropper, as they reprise last year’s performance in
Mr. King’s own kitchen, whipping up tasty seasonal delights. Each session will focus on utilizing herbs
from their gardens and locally grown produce. Second of 3 sessions.
July 22 (3rd session is Aug 12) - 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. - Kingwood Hall - $ 27 fee,
members & volunteers $23 per session
Kingwood Summer Reading Club
Join John Makley & Ruth Cropper at Kingwood on Thursday evenings to discuss the writings from some of the great
garden writers both past and present. Selections from their works will be available for download on our website,
or sent directly via email or regular mail. We will then meet in various Kingwood
locations to discuss the readings.

Kingwood Safari CANCELLED
Kids! Put on your safari garb as John Makley leads you on a treacherous trek through the wildlands of Kingwood Center.
We’ll begin at the planting grounds of the King Woo. From there we’’ll explore their woods and prairies looking for
plants and creatures never seen before. And at the end we’ll build a monument to our trek.

Lunch w/ Charles: Introduction to Floral Design
Bring your lunch and learn floral design from one of the best. From structure to style, to what flowers will do best
from your garden, Charles Applegate will show you the basics of creating wonderful arrangements
from flowers in your own garden.

Birds of the Garden – the four seasons of nature CANCELLED
Gardeners know birds may frequent their fruit trees, but do you know birds can be beneficial in the garden as well?
Join Cheryl Harner, President of the Greater Mohican Audubon Society, to follow the seasons of the year
and the birds one might see from your own backyard.

Succulent Containers
Bill Collins will show that containers can hold more than just flowering annuals. Join him to make a container
to take home using succulents and cacti.

Summer Floral Design
Bill Collins is not only Kingwood’s Head Gardener, but also a very talented floral designer. In this class Bill
will give ideas on using flowers from your garden for fabulous summer arrangements.

In the Director’s Garden

Visit with Kingwood Director Chuck Gleaves in his ten acre garden and landscape. Chuck will explain the how's and why's of
his unusual garden in which he is both trying to create an engaging living environment and experimenting with a wide
assortment of gardening techniques. This is a unique opportunity to see and hear about Chuck’s fearless
philosophy of gardening where failure is every bit as important as success.
Saturday, August 14 - 9 to 11 a.m. - Chuck’s House - $20 fee, members & volunteers $15
Deserts and Desserts - For Kids
Can plants grow in deserts? Can desserts be eaten before dinner? Come find out with John Makley as he explores the
Desert House and discusses how plants survive in such harsh conditions. Together you’ll learn if dessert
can be eaten before dinner. (Ages 5 and up)

Beyond the Flower: Growing & Gleaning Glorious Foliage
There’s more to a garden than flowers. Explore the beauty of foliage in the garden, and learn how to use it for
floral arrangements. Marni Crabtree-Davison, professional floral designer, will give a classroom
demonstrations and lead a walk through Kingwood.

Collecting Seed from Your Garden
Many of the plants grown each year for Kingwood’s displays are from seed collected here. Learn the basics of seed
collecting from Glenna Sheaffer. She will talk about when to collect and demonstrate how to do it,
along with proper cleaning and storage techniques.
Saturday, August 28 - 9 to 11 a.m. - Exhibit Hall - $12 fee, members & volunteers $8
